About

Our mission is to protect, restore and share the wonder of regional wetlands through community engagement and education. With this mission in mind, the Mt. Diablo Wetlands Fund was founded in 2012 and funds many vital efforts, include educational programs for Contra Costa County students, restoration projects throughout the wetlands, and research studies to learn more about the animals and organisms that call the wetlands home. The Fund is an Internal Revenue Code Section 501 (c) (3) charitable organization.

Who was Dorothy Sakazaki?

Dorothy M. Sakazaki was a long time resident of the Vine Hill neighborhood in Martinez. She served on the Board of Directors of Mt. View Sanitary District (MVSD) for 29 years and was the first woman elected to the Board. Often referred to as the “Mayor of Vine Hill” Dorothy was involved in many public programs benefiting the Mt. View Sanitary District, the Vine Hill area and Contra Costa County. She fully embraced the ideals of community service and public leadership.

She gave unselfishly of her time and wisdom for the benefit of the residents and property owners of MVSD. Dorothy’s contributions toward the acquisition, restoration and rehabilitation of the 130 acres of pristine wetlands known as the McNabney Marsh will continue to be of benefit to hundreds of children, students, residents and local visitors each year.

The growth and accomplishments of MVSD during her tenure in office will stand as a testament to her loyalty, dedication, and service.

Dorothy’s commitment to community service inspired the creation of the “Dorothy M. Sakazaki Environmental Education Endowment Fund (AKA the Mt. Diablo Wetlands Fund)” in 2012. She understood that protecting our wetlands and educating our kids about the importance of a healthy environment helps ensure a brighter future in our region.
